Heavenly Places

One thing we need to understand is that the Christian life is not limited to what we can see with our natural eyes. There is a spiritual realm, and the book of Ephesians gives us one of the clearest pictures in Scripture of that realm, our position in Christ, spiritual authority, and spiritual conflict.

The phrase “heavenly places” appears several times in Ephesians. If we understand how Paul uses that phrase, we begin to see that heavenly places are not only about where we go after this life. They describe a present spiritual reality, which is eternal.

What Are Heavenly Places?

When we hear the words “heavenly places,” we may immediately think of heaven as somewhere far away. But in Ephesians the phrase is used more broadly. It points us to the realm of the spirit—the unseen realm in which spiritual realities exist.

Paul shows us several things about heavenly places:

• We have been blessed with spiritual blessings there.
• Christ is seated there.
• We are seated there with Christ.
• God’s wisdom is made known there through the Church.
• Spiritual conflict also takes place there.

That gives us a balanced picture. Heavenly places are not mainly about demons or spiritual warfare. They are first about Christ, what God has provided in Him, and where believers are positioned in Him.

The Five References in Ephesians

1. We Are Blessed There — Ephesians 1:3

Paul says that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. Notice the wording: He has blessed us. Paul is describing something God has already provided in Christ.

This means our spiritual provision begins with what God has already done, not with us trying to persuade Him to give us something. Our responsibility is to believe what He has provided and learn to walk in it.

2. Christ Is Seated There — Ephesians 1:20

Jesus was raised from the dead and seated at the right hand of the Father in heavenly places, far above every principality, power, might, and dominion.

Jesus is not struggling to gain authority. He already has it. He is already above every spiritual power. That is the foundation for everything else Ephesians teaches about our position and authority.

3. We Are Seated There With Him — Ephesians 2:6

Ephesians then says that God raised us up together and seated us together with Christ in heavenly places. We are not trying to reach a spiritual position that God may someday give us. In Christ, Scripture says we are already seated with Him. Physically, we are living on earth, but spiritually our life is joined to Christ.

Our authority does not come from how strong we feel, how long we have been Christians, or how spiritual we appear. It comes from our position in Christ.

4. God’s Wisdom Is Displayed There — Ephesians 3:10

Paul says that through the Church the manifold wisdom of God is made known to principalities and powers in heavenly places.

This shows that the Church has a purpose in the spiritual realm that goes beyond fighting darkness. Through what God does in His people, His wisdom, purpose, and victory are being displayed.

5. There Is Spiritual Conflict There — Ephesians 6:12

Finally, Paul says that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against spiritual powers. Spiritual warfare is part of the picture, but it is not the whole picture.

The order matters: before Ephesians tells us about spiritual conflict, it first tells us that we are blessed in Christ, that Christ is seated above every power, that we are seated with Him, and that God is working through His Church.

The Spiritual Realm Is Present, Not Distant

The spiritual realm is not simply somewhere far away. We live in a natural world that we can see, touch, and measure, while at the same time there is a spiritual realm that we normally do not see with our physical eyes.

That is why we cannot judge everything only by what we see naturally. Spiritual reality can be present even when our natural senses do not recognize it.

Jesus spoke about heavenly things while He was physically on the earth. He lived fully aware of the Father and of spiritual reality. He did not live according to visible circumstances alone.

Heavenly Places Is Our Present Position

This is not only a future truth. Ephesians does not say that one day God will seat us with Christ. It says He has raised us up and seated us with Him.

We live on earth, but our position is in Christ. That changes how we think. Instead of trying to work our way toward God, we begin from what He has already done for us in Christ.

We are not trying to make Jesus victorious. He already is. We are not trying to create our position in Him. We are learning to live from the position He has already given us.

Living From What God Has Already Provided

Ephesians 1:3 says that we have already been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. This teaches us to think from provision rather than lack.

Too often we approach God as though everything is still undecided and we must somehow convince Him to act. Ephesians gives us another starting point: God has already acted in Christ.

There can be a difference between what is spiritually true and what we are presently seeing in the natural realm. Faith learns to agree with what God has said before the natural circumstances fully reflect it.

The Spiritual Realm and the Natural Realm

Jesus repeatedly demonstrated that the natural world is not the only reality. He spoke and circumstances changed. He healed the sick, delivered people from evil spirits, calmed storms, and turned water into wine.

The point is not that we ignore the natural world. The point is that we understand it is not the highest authority. God is able to bring change into the natural realm from the realm of the spirit. This helps us understand why prayer, faith, obedience, and spiritual discernment matter. We are dealing with more than what can be seen.

Heavenly Places and Spiritual Conflict

Because heavenly places include the spiritual realm, Ephesians also speaks about conflict there. Paul reminds us that people are not the real enemy. Our struggle is not ultimately against flesh and blood.

This keeps us from turning spiritual problems into personal battles. We still take responsibility for our actions and deal honestly with people, but we do not lose sight of the spiritual side of what is happening. Spiritual conflict should be understood from our position in Christ, not from fear. Christ is already above every power, and we are seated with Him.

Guarding Our Walk

Ephesians also warns us about things such as sin, anger, offense, corrupt communication, and division. These issues matter because our daily walk should agree with the position we have been given in Christ. We do not need to turn this teaching into a constant search for what the enemy is doing. The better question is whether we are living in truth, love, forgiveness, obedience, and unity.

If something is wrong in us, we deal with it. If we sin, we confess and repent. If we are carrying anger or offense, we deal with it. We do not allow those things to control our lives.

The Church in the Heavenly Realm

Ephesians does not present believers as isolated individuals. We are part of one body. There are many congregations and ministries, but one Church.

That matters because Ephesians 3:10 says God is making His wisdom known through the Church. The Church's spiritual purpose is larger than any one person, congregation, or ministry.

Unity does not mean everyone must look the same or agree on every secondary issue. It means we recognize that we belong to the same Christ and refuse to turn differences into jealousy, competition, bitterness, or division.

Bringing It All Together

Heavenly places give us a much bigger picture than spiritual warfare alone.

• Heavenly places are the realm of spiritual reality.
• We have already been blessed there in Christ.
• Jesus is seated there above every spiritual power.
• We are seated there with Him.
• God displays His wisdom there through the Church.
• Spiritual conflict also takes place there.

The main issue is not learning how to become obsessed with the spiritual realm. It is learning to understand what Scripture says about our position in Christ and then living from that truth.

Final Thought

We live in the natural world, but the natural world is not all there is. In Christ, we have been brought into a spiritual reality that Ephesians calls heavenly places. Jesus is already seated above every principality and power. We are already seated with Him. God has already blessed us in Christ.

Our responsibility is to believe what God has said, become more aware of the spiritual reality Scripture reveals, and learn to live from our position in Christ rather than from fear, lack, or what we can see with our natural eyes.
